Introducing Philosophy for Animals

Written by:

It’s the time of the year when I am bored and looking to start a new project. So I decided to create a new blog.

My name is Emily and I have been interested in animal rights for a bit over three years now. It started when I was 17 and first discovering the existence of philosophy. I learned about utilitarianism and factory farming and swore off meat forever. A year after that, I started getting involved in outreach, activism, and volunteering on farm sanctuaries.

I’m now co-president of the animal rights club on my campus for my senior year and still active in campaigns for the animals. I studied cell biology in college, wanting to learn about how life works on the molecular level, hoping maybe it would give me some clarity—but often, I wish I studied philosophy.

After taking a bioethics class, I have begun reading more intently about animal rights, normative ethics, sentience, research ethics and social change. I decided to make a new blog for this project. I plan to use this blog to track, reflect on and discuss what I’ve been learning with other like-minded people.

This definitely interests me! Long ago, I got an M.A. in philosophy. My interests were in ethics and ancient Greek philosophy, but I’m up for reflection on most topics. My husband specialized in philosophy of mind and actually has a serious interest in animal cognition. I’m looking forward to reading your investigations. I hope I can have something useful to contribute, but I’m pretty rusty. Thanks for helping animals. It’s important work, especially working for humane treatment in farming.

That’s super cool! Thank you for reading. Does your husband know any good reading on animal cognition by any chance?
